…And The Award Goes To (Feb.update)

In Hockey Hits on March 3, 2010 by geespotting

A short month because of the Olympic break…but, some changes to take note of.

MVP – ALEXANDER OVECHKIN, WASHINGTON

– The Caps came very close to an all time NHL record for consecutive wins, and OV was the main reason it almost happened. His numbers have been incredible, and so has his play. He is back at number one!

RUNNER UP – Henrik Sedin, VANCOUVER

– With early season injuries to brother Daniel and Luongo, Henrik has to garner consideration for the Canucks and their lead atop the division.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Sidney Crosby, PITTSBURGH & Duncan Keith, CHICAGO

TOP GOALIE – Evgeni Nabokov, SAN JOSE

– Yes, it is a surprise move for the top spot, as Nabby’s numbers and his play have been better than Ryan Miller, who has tailed off in the past 2 weeks.

RUNNER UP – Ryan Miller, BUFFALO

– Where the Sabres finish this season will all fall on the shoulders on Miller, who must be strong down the stretch for the Sabres to clinch a playoff spot.

HONORABLE MENTIONS – Miikka Kiprusoff, CALGARY & Jimmy Howard, DETROIT

TOP DEFENCEMAN – Duncan Keith, CHICAGO

– As the Hawks continue to roll, so does the smooth-skating Keith. It will be interesting to see how he plays down the stretch after his stint with Team Canada.

RUNNER UP: Dan Boyle, SAN JOSE

– Another Team Canada member, Boyle has continued to be the anchor on a strong Shark team.

HONORABLE MENTIONS – Drew Doughty, LOS ANGELES & Mike Green, WASHINGTON

TOP ROOKIE – Tyler Myers, BUFFALO

– The big kid continues to plug along for the Sabres, and his confidence continues to grow too.

RUNNER UP – Matt Duchene, COLORADO

– Now the leading scorer among rookies, he is getting better and better as the Av’s continue to hang in there among the top 8 in the West.

HONORABLE MENTIONS – Jimmy Howard, DETROIT & John Tavares, NEW YORK ISLANDERS

MOST SPORTSMANLIKE – Martin St. Louis, TAMPA BAY

– St. Louis, a former winner of this award, has just 10 pm’s on the season, and still ranking among the league’s top point getters.

RUNNER UP – Brad Richards, DALLAS

– Like Martin, Richards is a former winner with low pm’s and a ton of points.

HONORABLE MENTIONS – Anze Kopitar, LOS ANGELES & Patrick Marleau, SAN JOSE

TOP DEFENSIVE FORWARD – Alex Burrows, VANCOUVER

– Finally, someone has knocked off Parise off the top of that perch. Burrows has a better plus/minus record and 4 shorties, while playing on the team’s top line.

RUNNER UP – Zach Parise, NEW JERSEY

– He still has the big defensive and offensive numbers on the defense first Devils.

HONORABLE MENTIONS – Jordan Staal, PITTSBURGH & Patrick Marleau, SAN JOSE

TOP COACH – Terry Murray, LOS ANGELES

– This young team has the tools to pull off an upset or two in the playoffs, and Murray’s leadership has been key.

RUNNER UP – Joe Sacco, COLORADO

– Like Murray and the Kings, the young Av’s have not hit the skids yet.

HONORABLE MENTIONS – Dave Tippett, PHOENIX & Cory Clouston, OTTAWA

…That does it for edition 5, and just 2 more to go!
