The Cup Baby – Day One

In Hockey Hits on April 15, 2010 by geespotting

– This is gonna be a long haul, but, here is the haul from day one:

EAST CONF.

(5)  OTTAWA  5 AT  (4)  PITTSBURGH  4

– SENS LEAD SERIES 1-0.

…A huge start for the Sens, and a game in which their pluggers paved the way to a game one win. Spezza and Alfredsson weren’t much of a factor, and Milan Michalek blew his knee out before the game was through. I am guessing that if that Sens are to win the series, they will need production from their big guns, but, for now, hats off for the win. Sid and Malkin were productive for the Pens, but, only on the PP. Marc-Andre Fleury will have to be a lot better in order for the champs to avoid being chumps.

STARS 1. Chris Kelly, OTT. 2. Evgeni Malkin, PIT. 3. Erik Karlsson.

(7)  PHILADELPHIA  2 AT  (2)  NEW JERSEY 1.

– FLYERS LEAD SERIES 1-0.

…Another upset as Brian Boucher lead the way in goal for the Flyers in a game one stunner. The Flyers only had 14 shots on goal, and still slipped by with the win. As for Ilya Kovalchuk, he had his chances, but, then (in typical form) started to panic, and try and do way too much. In other words, play like a Pee Wee and try and go through the whole team. He will have to better, and in a better frame of mind, if the Devils are gonna bounce back in game two. It essentially was a pretty good road win for the Flyers, who, now have the home ice after the win.

STARS 1. Mike Richards, PHA. 2. Travis Zajac, N.J. 3. Brian Boucher, PHA.

WEST CONF.

(5)  DETROIT 2  AT  (4)  PHOENIX  3.

– COYOTES LEAD SERIES 1-0.

…It was almost like 2 games in one. The Wings dominated the first period, but, Ilya Bryzgalov stole the show, other than a fluke goal that Tomas Holmstrom slipped in. Periods two and three saw the Coyotes press more, and garnered quite a few more chances than the Wings. In the end, it was a non-existent regular season PP that came through, and the Desert Dogs rattle off the first win, their first playoff win in almost a decade!

STARS 1. Ilya Bryzgalov, PHO. 2. Jimmy Howard, DET. 3. Derek Morris, PHO.

(8)  COLORADO  2 AT  (1)  SAN JOSE  1.

– AVS LEAD SERIES 1-0.

…Here we go again, as the young Avs outlasted the Sharks in a game one yawner. A last minute (50 seconds to go actually)  goal from Chris Stewart gave Colorado the game one victory. When the goal was scored, cameras panned the Sharks bench and players like Thornton, Boyle and Heatley look tired…already. What would happen to that club in the off season if they lose another series early. Should be interesting.

STARS 1. Paul Stastny, COL. 2. Evgeni Nabokov, S.J. 3. Craig Anderson, COL.

– 4 games on night one…and pretty much 4 surprises. The playoffs are underway baby!
