The Cup Baby – Day 5

In Hockey Hits on April 19, 2010 by geespotting

Day 5 was a long, action packed day. Talking about 10 hours of straight playoff hockey, and some crazy results too:

…It was vintage Martin Brodeur in this one as the Flyers dominated the third period…and Marty dominated them. A pair of Brian Rolston goals weren’t going to be enough for the Devils, who will need more from Parise and Kovalchuk in game 4 in order to even this thing. Once again, Mike Richards was a force for the Flyers, and set up the winner in the extra frame as unlikely hero Danny Carcillo ended it.

Redemption for Danny Boy, as he took a silly penalty earlier in the game, and missed a big chance in regulation too.

STARS 1. Daniel Carcillo, PHA. 2. Martin Brodeur, N.J. 3. Mike Richards, PHA.

(4)  PITTSBURGH  4  AT (5)  OTTAWA  2.

…This was the Penguins at their best, as they opened up an early lead, and cruised to the victory, and a series lead. Sidney Crosby was instrumental again with a goal, an assist, and a huge hit.

The Sens tried to rough it up, and intimidate players like Malkin, and Letang, but, really to no avail. A big effort will be needed by Ottawa to get back into this one.

STARS 1. Sidney Crosby, PIT. 2. Bill Guerin, PIT. 3. Matt Cullen, OTT.

(1)  SAN JOSE  O  AT  (8)  COLORADO  1 (OT).

…Instant drama in this one, as it is announced in the pre-game warmup that Dany Heatley wouldn’t be suiting up for the Sharks. Out with a upper/lower body injury. Seriously! No word on his injury…but, apparently back tomorrow for game 4. The rest of the drama in this game was provided by Av’s goaltender Craig Anderson, who played the game of his life. 50 saves in an OT shutout victory. Another side-bar in this one were the constant battles after the whistles. This is turning into an ugly one…and the kids of Colorado and the men of the San Jose aren’t getting along. The finale to this one, was an own goal that Ryan O’Reilly was credited with in the extra frame. Dan Boyle did his best Steve Smith impression. Take a peek at this bizarro ending:

STARS 1. Craig Anderson, COL. 2. Devin Setoguchi, S.J. 3. Ryan O’Reilly, COL.

(7)  NASHVILLE  0  AT  (2)  CHICAGO  2.

…The game one Predator win was all about the goaltending woes of the Hawks. That horrendous opening goal that Anti Niemi allowed was all anyone could talk about in the Windy City after that loss. Game two was a different story. The Hawks controlled most of the game, unlike the game before, and Niemi was solid in recording his first ever playoff shutout.

STARS 1. Anti Niemi, CHI. 2. Patrick Kane, CHI. 3. Pekka Rinne, NAS.

(4)  PHOENIX  4  AT (5)  DETROIT  2.

…The surprising Coyotes did it again, rolling into Hockeytown, and knocking off the Wings. The speed of the ‘Yotes seemed too much for the Wings in this one, and anytime Detroit had prolonged pressure, Ilya Bryzgalov was able to withstand the test. A strong attack from all lines was the key to the Phoenix victory, with the Czech line scoring twice, including a beaut by Petr Prucha.

This was done without their best checker in Vernon Fiddler, and Captain Coyote, Shane Doan, who left the game early in the 2nd after smashing into the boards and hurting his shoulder. He is day to day…and hopefully back for the Coyotes for game 4.

STARS 1. Petr Prucha, PHO. 2. Ilya Bryzgalov, PHO. 3. Henrik Zetterberg, DET.

– 3 games on Monday, including the Canucks and Kings from Tinseltown. Will there be a third straight 3-2 overtime game? Also, can the Habs bounce back at home after their collapse against the Caps on Saturday night. And, how will the Sabres do heading into Beantown without leading goal getter Thomas Vanek.
