And The Award Goes To…CALDER

A look at the top rookies in a moment…the Norris nominees are out Friday, as opposed to what I said on yesterday’s blog. As for the Byng, once again, (just like the Selke) I did not include Pavel Datsyuk on my list, while my top 2 in that award (St. Louis and Richards) were both nominated. Here goes a look at the top rookies:

Tyler Myers was the best rookie in a pretty good crop this year. He was among the top rookie point getters, and was his team’s best defenceman. Myers has seen his stock rise incredibly in the past 18 months. Last year, a Gold medal with Canada’s World Junior team, MVP of the WHL Playoffs in leading his Kelowna Rockets to a league title, and runner up at the Memorial Cup. This season, comparisons to the Bruins Zdeno Chara…but, many saying he will be better than Chara. When will the Norris be his too?

– Duchene lead all rookie scorers this past season, and was the best in the Tavares vs. Duchene battle. Matt was a big part of the Colorado turnaround, and looks to be their replacement for Joe Sakic. Look for Duchene to be a star in the league for years to come.

– We already mentioned Rask as one of the top goalies of the year, and he outdueled Detroit’s Jimmy Howard for a spot among the top 4. As for Tavares, he put up good numbers on Long Island, during another long season. He may take an extra year or two to break out, unlike Tampa’s Steven Stamkos who had his breakout year in year two. For Tavares though, his numbers will have to increase with the young players the Isles have…and I don’t think they will compare to the linemate Stamkos had in Marty St. Louis.

…Alright, tomorrow, I will unveil the Norris nominees, and you can probably sing “Oh Canada” throughout!
