The Cup Baby – Day 7

In Hockey Hits on April 21, 2010 by geespotting

5 big games from yesterday…c’mon now…here is how it played out:

EAST CONF.

(4)  PITTSBURGH  7  AT  (5)  OTTAWA  4.

– PENGUINS LEAD SERIES 3-1.

…Looks like the Sens are on life support as the Pens and their high powered (Sid Crosby, in particular) offence crushed Ottawa last night. The key moment: a wild 2nd period where Pittsburgh outscored Ottawa 5-3. Once again, Ottawa tried to rough-house the Penguins and their stars, but, no un-raveling from them. Crosby had 2 goals and 2 assists, and now has a whopping 11 points in just 4 games. It could all end for the Sens tomorrow (and I am expecting it will)!

STARS 1. Sidney Crosby, PIT. 2. Chris Kunitz, PIT. 3. Sergei Gonchar, PIT.

(2)  NEW JERSEY  1  AT  (7)  PHILADELPHIA  4.

– FLYERS LEAD SERIES 3-1.

…After their OT win on Sunday, Philly had all the momentum heading into game 4, and they kept ‘mo’ with an easier than usual win. Other than the 3rd period of game 3, Brian Boucher has out-played Marty Brodeur, and that has to be the biggest concern for the Devils. Jeff Carter and Danny Briere powered the offence with 3 points each, and Danny Carcillo added another goal too! Concerns for the Flyers though, as both Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne will be on the shelf for game 5 in Jersey. They are day to day with either an upper or lower body injury…you know…the usual.

STARS 1. Jeff Carter, PHA. 2. Daniel Briere, PHA. 3. Brian Boucher, PHA.

WEST CONF.

(4)  PHOENIX  0  AT  (5)  DETROIT  3.

– SERIES TIED AT 2-2.

…A big win for the Wings, and a big win for goalie Jimmy Howard as Detroit evened this series. The Coyotes were playing without captain Shane Doan, but, that didn’t stop them from keeping this one close. As a matter of fact, a scoreless game wasn’t changed until a controversial goal late in the 2nd by Henrik Zetterberg. A beauty by Pavel Datsyuk would put the finishing touches on this one:

In typical Detroit fashion, there was a ton of backlash for Jimmy Howard on his game 3 performance. He quieted those critics with the goose-egg last night.

STARS 1. Jimmy Howard, DET. 2. Henrik Zetterberg, DET. 3. Pavel Datsyuk, DET.

(2)  CHICAGO  1  AT  (7)  NASHVILLE  4.

– PREDATORS LEAD SERIES 2-1.

…The Predators did it again to Chicago, frustrating them with their tight checking, and rolled to a game 3 win. When the Hawks do happen to come up with any sustained pressure, it is Pekka Rinne who saves the day for Nashville. It was a party-like atmosphere in the stands (it is Nashville after all) when Martin Erat clinched this one with a penalty shot:

Like the Sharks in their game 4 (coming up) against Colorado, the Hawks are almost in a must win situation for their game 4 tomorrow.

STARS 1. David Legwand, NAS. 2. Pekka Rinne, NAS. 3. Steve Sullivan, NAS.

(1)  SAN JOSE  2 AT  (8)  COLORADO  1 (OT)

– SERIES TIED AT 2-2.

…Just like the previous 3 games in the series, game 4 was all about Av’s goaltender Craig Anderson, and all about the youth of Colorado vs. the old legs of the Sharks. Once again, San Jose dominated this game, but, just couldn’t score against Anderson, who made 43 saves in this one. These chippy games always seem to take their toll on the Sharks, but, they keep pressuring Colorado, and last night, found a way to win in the extra frame, and found a way to even the series. San Jose is still having problems with their top guns in Thornton and Marleau. They can’t seem to find the back of the net, and the third member of their dangerous line is playing hurt. Dany Heatley returned last night, and had a number of good chances, but, still looks off with what is an obvious leg injury. Joe Pavelski ended it, and he was easily the best player on the ice. Game 5 moves back to Cali. Here is the OT ender:

STARS 1. Joe Pavelski, S.J. 2. Craig Anderson, COL. 3. Evgeni Nabokov, S.J.

– 3 more games on the sked tonight, and some intriguing match-ups too. Carey Price WILL start for the Habs as they try and even their series with the Caps. Thomas Vanek is a game time decision for the Sabres as they try to rally on the road in Beantown, and the Canucks will try to stay out of the penalty box with their game in LA LA Land.
