The Cup Baby – Day 8

In Hockey Hits on April 22, 2010 by geespotting

3 games on yesterday’s sked…here is the shakedown:

EAST CONF.

(1)  WASHINGTON  6  AT  (8)  MONTREAL  3.

– CAPITALS LEAD SERIES 3-1.

…Once again the Habs had a shot in this one, but, were stymied by Semyon Varlamov. He was at his best in the first period. Like the previous game in Montreal, the Caps got a shortie to change the pace of the game, and the big boys (Ovechkin, Backstrom) paved the way with 3 points each. Another familiar theme was a Hab losing his cool, and costing his team in the penalty box. This time it was goalie Carey Price, who showed his frustration after a Caps goal by firing the puck at the celebrating players. It doesn’t look too good heading back to D.C.

STARS 1. Alexander Ovechkin, WAS. 2. Semyon Varlamov, WAS. 3. Nicklas Backstrom, WAS.

(3)  BUFFALO  2  AT  (6)  BOSTON  3  (2OT)

– BRUINS LEAD SERIES 3-1.

…This series is turing out to be a goaltenders duel between the rookie Tuukka Rask and the possible Vezina winner this year Ryan Miller. At this point though, it’s Rask with the upper hand as the B’s downed the Sabres in double overtime, the longest game of the playoffs so far. It was a power play goal too as the Sabres were called with too many men on the ice, a popular penalty so far this playoff season. And sweet justice for Miroslav Satan, as he got the OT winner against the team in which he starred for so many years. Here is the end to this one:

If the Sabres are to have any chance in this series, then they will need contributions from their gunners in Roy, Pominville, Connolly and Vanek, providing Thomas can return from injury.

STARS 1. Tuukka Rask, BOS. 2. Ryan Miller, BUF. 3. Patrice Bergeron, BOS.

WEST CONF.

(3)  VANCOUVER  6  AT  (6)  LOS ANGELES  4.

– SERIES TIED AT 2-2.

…Once again the Canucks found themselves in penalty trouble, and found themselves behind, and on a number of occasions too. On a positive note, they finally stopped the Kings from scoring on the power play, after 6 straight PP markers. In the end, Roberto Luongo made a couple of huge third period saves, including one on a breakaway, and the Sedins came through, and combined on the game winner:

5 points between Daniel and Henrik, and the Canucks finally tested Jonathan Quick, and beat him 5 times in evening this entertaining first round series.

STARS 1. Daniel Sedin, VAN. 2. Christian Ehrhoff, VAN. 3. Wayne Simmonds, L.A.

– 4 games tonight, including the Sens and Devils trying to stay alive in their respective series’ with Pittsburgh and Philly.
