The Cup Baby – Day 14

The first of 2 round one game sevens…and this one wasn’t pretty:

(5)  DETROIT  6  AT  (4)  PHOENIX  1.

…This game 7 wasn’t one that will remembered as a classic, except for the fact it was classic Red Wings. Detroit had the jump early (they seemed to start well in most of the games this series), but, didn’t have a letdown like in previous games. They kept the pressure on the Coyotes, and had a 3-1 lead late in the 2nd when Phoenix was rewarded a 5 on 3 power play. They killed it off, and had Brad Stuart, of all people, leave the penalty box and head out on a breakaway on Ilya Bryzgalov. Here is the result:

That goal came with just a few seconds left in the period, and the rest was history. The Wings were too strong, worked harder than the Coyotes, and their stars starred. Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg and on and on. Despite heroic efforts from Jovanovski, Michalek and Fiddler, it wasn’t to be for the Desert Dogs and their Cinderella season!

STARS 1. Nicklas Lidstrom, DET. 2. Brian Rafalski, DET. 3. Henrik Zetterberg, DET.

SERIES MVP: Henrik Zetterberg

…Zetterberg was dominant throughout the entire series. In 7 games, he scored 6 times, and added 5 assists. It was a quieter than normal regular season for Henrik, but, he showed why he was a Conn Smythe winner by leading the way for Detroit. His line was Filpulla and Bertuzzi was the best game in and game out, and Zetterberg’s usual work ethic rewarded him with 11 points, and MVP status.

“the bet”

…I do a radio morning show in Penticton, and have been a Coyotes fan since the days of the Jets. The afternoon host is a Wings fan, and we wagered a little bet on the series. If the Coyotes won, he would join me on my morning show and enjoy a ‘desert dog’ milkshake. Basically, it would an unflattering hot dog in a shake. If the Wings were to win, I would go on his afternoon show and do an ‘octopus’ shake. Needless to say…it was me who had to endure an ugly Friday afternoon treat. At least the smell was worse than the taste…if that is any consolation. Here is how it sounded:
